Dear Soft Matter Colleagues and Friends,

On Friday 6 November 2020 at 9:30 AM we are hosting a seminar during which

Karol Capała (Marian Smoluchowski Institute of Physics, Jagiellonian University)

will give a talk

Kramers-like problem for Lévy flights

Abstract
A noise induced escape of a particle is one of the archetypal problems in stochastic dynamics. Among others, it was studied by H. A. Kramers in the case of the Gaussian white noise in overdamped (large viscosity) and underdamped (small viscosity) regimes. In the overdamped regime, the obtained formula for the reaction rate can be interpreted as the Arrhenius equation. Therefore, the stochastic motion in the double-well potential can be used as an effective model of chemical reactions.
Since then, the noise induced escape of a particle was intensively studied in the overdamped and underdamped regimes as well as in quantum setups. I will present extension of problem of the transition rates in a double-well potential to the case of Lévy noises in both over- and underdamped regime.

The seminar will be conducted on Zoom
