Many physical and data-based models were constructed to address this problem; however, they are often based on completely different assumptions and their limits of applicability remain unknown. </font></div><div style="margin: 0cm; background-color: white;" class=""><font face="HelveticaNeue" class=""> </font></div><div style="margin: 0cm; background-color: white;" class=""><font face="HelveticaNeue" class="">During the talk, I am going to give an overview of my PhD project on systematically developing a rigorous mathematical framework to better understand the relations between currently used models. I start by constructing a simple benchmark scenario for coupled surface-subsurface flows. Then I use it to better understand the physical process of river flow formation and compare the obtained result to the statistical flood estimation model recommended for use in the UK. </font></div><div style="margin: 0cm;
